Lately, I’ve started to attempt some recipes and learning to cook. I’ve always been really scared of getting in the kitchen, getting the pots and pans going and cooking someone else a meal. For some reason, this thought terrifies me.
I don’t want to make someone ill, be the reason they didn’t enjoy their meal and be judged for my cooking. Food is so personal and it tells so many personal stories that it can be extremely tricky to navigate. Especially when it comes to cooking for someone else.
But I love food. I love eating out with other people over a big plate of exciting new cuisines. Sitting at the dinner table eating my comfort food with my boyfriend and glass of wine. Food is at the centre of what we do. So I really want to take on this challenge and attempt new recipes.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been attempting to bake cookies. I followed the BBC Good Food recipe (so not ready to create my own recipes yet!). And they’ve turned out pretty good if I do say so myself!
On the first attempt, I used an electric mixer, changed the chocolate chips for chopped chocolate and added salt. This batch wasn’t as good. The cookies didn’t melt in the oven (as you can see in the photo, the first ones were those little nuggets in the back, ups!) so I had to flatten them out. They were also too salty and the chips were too big for the cookies.
The second attempt went much better. I mixed it all with a wooden spoon, this helped with the melting – although, it still isn’t perfect. I also added vanilla extract and stayed away from the salt. This made them a lot sweeter. I then used chocolate chips instead of chopped chocolate which made the cookies more consistent. As per my boyfriend’s review these were a 9/10. Massive success for me.
This recipe was easier then I thought, and learning the different techniques has helped massively. I’ll now experiment with adding new ingredients and changing quantities.
This first experience has definitely opened my appetite to try something more challenging next time. As it was baking I didn’t feel the pressure of ruining them as it wasn’t a whole meal. However, definitely still not ready to take them into to the office for everyone to try.
